How to fit a recessed manhole cover

  1. Check the cover and frame size against your chamber opening before you start.
  2. Bed the frame on a full bed of mortar so its top edge sits flush with the finished surface, and check it is level in both directions.
  3. Lift the tray out and fill it with block paving or thicker paving, bedded on mortar or screed so the infill sits flush with the frame.
  4. Grout or point the joints to match the surrounding surface, keeping the lifting points clear.
  5. Let the mortar cure fully before the cover is walked on.

Frequently asked questions

What size manhole cover do I need?
Measure the opening of your inspection chamber and compare it with the 600 x 600mm size above. The frame needs a solid bed of mortar all round, so check there is room for it on the chamber walls.

Can I drive over this manhole cover?
No. EN124 Class A15 covers are tested to 15kN and are intended for areas used only by pedestrians and cyclists. For driveways or any vehicle traffic, use a cover rated B125 or higher.

What can I put in a 80mm recessed tray?
The 80mm tray suits block paving or thicker paving. Allow for the bedding layer under the infill so it finishes flush with the frame.

Is an aluminium cover strong enough for a patio?
Yes, for pedestrian use. It meets EN124 Class A15, the standard for pedestrian areas. Aluminium also keeps the tray light enough to lift without special tools.
